Local lightweight building materials manufacturer, introduces latest UltraSTEEL® technology in Southern Africa

Donn, a subsidiary of Saint-Gobain Gyproc, recently announced the introduction of UltraSTEEL® 3 technology into their production facility and own the only Southern Africa and Sub-Sahara license issued by the Hadley Group UK. The patented UItraSTEEL® 3 process is a major technological breakthrough resulting from over 20 years of extensive research and development.
The metal is formed between mating rolls, which produce a dimpled pattern across the surface material. During the process, the effective thickness of the material is increased by locally deforming the strip to twice its original gauge. This deformation leads to substantial work hardening thereby making it stronger.
The UltraSTEEL®production process is more efficient, which results in significant reductions in raw material usage. The surface characteristics of roll formed steel are altered – and therefore the base metal is strengthened.
UltraSTEEL® 3 is applied in the manufacturing process of drywall stud and track that are lightweight, non-load bearing and quickly assembled on site. They provide cost-effective partitions suitable for all types of commercial, recreational and industrial buildings as well as residential developments.
The technical benefits of the re-engineering are significant for the construction trade. UltraSTEEL® 3 products are able to carry a higher load and are tauter. In addition, the products have reduced memory and spring tension characteristics. Sections manufactured using the UltraSTEEL® 3 processes have a greater ability to return to their original form after loading.
The UltraSTEEL® 3 cross-section ensures that every screw is in contact with a material thickness greater than the nominal gauge of the steel, resulting in a significant increase in torque required to strip-out the screw.
When applying light gauge UltraSTEEL® 3 in studded wall applications, research has proven that there is a reduction in noise transmission and fire test performance shows significant improvement in stability, integrity and insulation.
“On securing the license, we installed a stand-alone UltraSTEEL® 3 rigitiser, which is the first installation in the world outside of the UK. In our quest for excellence and in line with our strategy to remain at the forefront of innovation, I have every confidence that this revolutionary technology will exceed our valued client’s expectations,” said Garry Powell Technical and Innovation Manager.
